Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) - Heavy Civil Construction McMillen, Inc. is looking for a Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) with strong Infrastructure and Heavy Civil experience, to join our growing construction division. The SSHO will oversee all aspects of project-specific safety programs on complex construction projects. The person selected for this role will assist project and safety management in the oversight and execution of the project's health and safety program in accordance with regulatory requirements, client obligations, and project goals. This person will integrate our SEE Safety in Action culture into the project to achieve our goal of zero-incidents. Responsibilities: • Provide Safety oversight and act as one of the project’s Competent Person as the Site Safety and Health Officer. • Ensure safety and health policies and procedures are being adhered to in accordance with EM 385-1-1, OSHA, state/local regulations, and the Accident Prevention Plan (APP). • Collaborate with Project Managers to ensure that health and safety activities are incorporated effectively into project work plans and AHA’s to successfully mitigate or eliminate hazards. • Verify and ensure all project personnel, including subcontractors and visitors, are completing work in accordance with the projects’ APP and applicable regulations. • Review AHA's and work plans with project management to ensure thorough hazard identification and controls are in place. • Provide and maintain records of project safety orientations and required trainings/certifications. • Conduct safety inspections and document findings and corrective actions. • Ensure emergency action plans are in place and working effectively. • Provide mentoring, direction, and subject matter expertise to project personnel. • Communicate effectively with representatives of regulatory agencies/customers to resolve compliance issues and provide requested information. • Report and investigate all accidents/near misses and ensure accurate and thorough documentation in accordance with company and project requirements. • Attend all pre-construction conferences, tail-gate meetings, and pre-work meetings, to include preparatory meetings and periodic in-progress meetings. • Maintain open communication with safety management and project supervision. Qualifications: • Minimum 5 years of experience and success as an SSHO, or equivalent role, in the heavy civil construction industry. • 1-year of experience may be substituted with a Nationally recognized Occupational Safety and Health certificate, e.g. CHST, STS, etc. • OSHA 30-Hour Construction card. • Documented 8 hours of annual training for the last 5 years. • Demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of a project’s safety and health program. • Strong understanding of OSHA and USACE EM 385-1-1 safety and health regulations. • Record keeping and injury management skills. • Strong organizational and time management skills. • Strong written and verbal communication skills. • Strong work ethic with the ability to solve problems and implement solutions in complex work environments. • The ability to work independently as well as part of a team. • Communicate and interact with management, supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment in a professional and effective manner. • Willingness to be location-based for the duration of the project • CHST certification. • EM 385-1-1 compliant Competent Person training/certificates: Fall Protection, Scaffolding, Confined Space. • Proficient with technology and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) with the ability to effectively learn and adapt to new software and applications as needed. • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, or related field. Compensation Package: • Pay Range: $40.00 – $50.00 hr.
