CNC Milling Machinist

CNC Horizontal Milling Machinist Job Overview: Smith Pump is seeking a skilled CNC Machinist to join our team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience setting up and operating large machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, boring machines, and grinders. You will be responsible for machining both metallic and non-metallic workpieces, ensuring high-quality components are produced to precise specifications. This role requires independent thinking, attention to detail, and resourcefulness to translate specifications into component requirements effectively. Key Responsibilities: • Set up and operate large mill CNC machines for tasks like drilling, grinding, and milling. • Plan and layout jobs from blueprints, drawings, sketches, or verbal instructions. • Review job orders for product specifications and determine the sequence of operations. • Reverse-engineer various machine parts and equipment. • Load and unload materials, parts, or products for machining. • Read and interpret technical drawings and set-up documentation. • Perform accurate bench operations to fit and align parts for smooth operation. • Inspect and measure finished products to ensure they meet specifications. • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on machine shop equipment. • Work with Manufacturing Engineers to edit and update CNC programs for continuous improvement. • *Measures of Success:** • Quality of work completed. • Timeliness in completing work orders within allotted timelines. • Reduction in warranty repairs. • Proactive in preventing machine downtime. MANUAL MACHINIST

Seeking a Machinist to perform a variety of tasks in the machine shop to diagnose, troubleshoot, tear down, repair, and re-assemble various production machinery and/or its components to manufacture parts for pumps and other related machinery. Uses independent thinking, attention to detail and resourcefulness to translate specifications and drawings into component requirements and apply best practices effectively. Responsible for set up, cleaning and maintenance of machining tools. Operates lathes, milling machines, grinders, impact guns, drills and/or saws to produce parts needed. Machines quality components to stated specifications. Accurately measures products produced, using a variety of calibrated instrumentation. POSITION EXPECTATIONS: • Understands and follows instructions. • Reads and understands drawings, schematics, and layout diagrams. • Understands what a repair entails to plan and prepare the appropriate tools and equipment (including spare/back-up parts) needed for the job site. • Handles delicate parts, such as seals, bearings, and rotors. • Operates a variety of hand, electric and air-driven tools. • Uses and reads calibrated instruments. • Performs tasks to mark or identify parts, components, materials, or equipment. • Applies knowledge of standard machine tolerances (e.g. feed rates, machining practices, fits and clearances, etc.) • Loads and unloads materials, parts or products onto or from pallets, skids or trucks. • Delivers metal parts or stock to designated work areas for machining. • Lifts metal part or stock onto machine and secures it on machine table, in chuck or holding fixture to assist in setting up machine. • Removes metal chips and shavings from surfaces of machines and wipes surfaces of machines to remove excess oil. • Separates metal shavings, chips and scrap materials from trash and places them in bins for scrapping. • Removes burrs or excess metal from machined parts. • Adds coolant to reservoirs of machines and lubricates machine parts and ways. • Demonstrates an awareness of the process and plans for next steps. Properly labels, matchmarks, and organizes parts for efficient reassembly. • Reads and interprets drawings, technical specifications and set up documentation. • Identifies different types of materials visually, such as bronze vs. mild steel. • Lifts metal part or stock onto machine and secures it on table, in chuck or holding fixture to set up the machine. • Adds coolant to reservoirs of machines and lubricates machine parts and ways. • Machines and modifies simple parts and equipment to meet requirements. REQUIRED: High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED); general technical service skills; prior experience working as a Machinist under the supervision of a senior level employee until able to complete all Level 1 tasks proficiently, according to quality and safety standards, without supervision; able to train and supervise the work of lower level machinists and knowledge of: • Pump and motor mechanics, operation and installation. • Use of test equipment and measuring instruments. • Use of milling and turning machines. • Industrial hazards, safety and health precautions and environmental concerns. • Relevant ordinances and regulations. PREFERRED: One or more years’ experience working in the pump industry, with a mechanical background and/or training.
