CNC Machinist Job Description Summary/Objective Sets up and operate CNC mill or lathe to perform machining operations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities 1. Reads process sheets, blueprints, and sketches of part to determine machining to be done, dimensional specifications, set up, and operating requirements. 2. Mounts workpiece between centers, in chuck, or to faceplate. 3. Selects and installs preset tooling in tool posts, turrets or indexing heads, and automatic tool change magazine, in sequence specified on process sheet. 4. Depresses buttons, toggles, and starts machining operation. 5. Observes control panel and compares with data on process sheet to verify dimensional adjustments, feed rates, and speeds of machining cuts. 6. Inspects first run piece and spot checks succeeding pieces for conformance to specifications. 7. Studies job packets and organizes materials for next run during automatic controlled cycles to shorten changeover time. 8. Sets tools before positioning them in mill or lathe. 9. Follow weekly schedule to turn jobs to meet shipping deadlines. 10. Maintain machine maintenance and cleanliness, fill out proper checklists. 11. Verify that proper tooling required to do daily tasks is on-hand. Position Requirements 1. Working knowledge of machining techniques and familiarity with precision measuring tools are required. The ability to read blueprint specifications and check parts for conformance is required. Operators may run more than one unit simultaneously. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: • Uses tools such as edge finders, indicators, and probes, to find machine work offsets • Runs parts that meet engineering specifications without supervision • Reads, understands and interprets engineering and manufacturing drawings with working knowledge of GD&T • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and informs the lead person of discrepancies • Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications using standard measuring tools • Learns and can recognize machine deviation versus cutter or holding problems and informs supervisor • Thoroughly inspects first part run with mid to high level of complexity • Meets job standard times consistently and communicates when not in conformance • Ensure part count and data entry is accurate and correct on a consistent basis • Accurately complete and maintain all paperwork • Follows all safety guidelines established by the Company, including proper use of safety equipment and relevant safety procedures • Can solve routine problems and demonstrates some advanced problem-solving ability • Communicates discrepancies, non-conformances, and deviations to supervisor • Other duties as assigned Qualifications: • Excellent and/or correctable vision • Ability to accomplish tasks and follow directions without deviation from procedures • Requires a high school diploma/GED or graduation from a certified technical school • Must be highly motivated and able to work independently with strong attention to detail • 1-2 years of CNC Machining or related experience within the last 5 years preferred • Must be able to use the English language and be able to communicate orally and in writing (basic oral instructions, simple written memos, and instructions) • Must be able to read and interpret drawings, follow routers, use simple math to perform basic calculations, and use essential handheld measuring tools Work Environment: Climate-controlled clean production environment.
