Fitter/Welder (Local and Traveling)

The Kelly Group is seeking a Fitter/Welder for its Lafayette, Indiana, location and work in the surrounding area. Candidates should own their own hand tools and have a minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience working with process pipe, preferably in the grain industry. This position will periodically travel outside the local area as needed for specific projects. Per diem is available when traveling. Welder I

At Wabash, Welders perform a variety of tasks vary from location to location. Welders have a key role in the manufacture of carbon/ stainless steel and aluminum products and subassemblies. Welders are a crucial position in the manufacturing process and are therefore expected to produce high-quality work while upholding production standards. We require Qualification Weld Tests and, in some cases, Certification Tests depending on the product line. Applicants that do not pass the initial Weld Test can be qualified by attending our own in-house Weld School, demonstrating that they can pass the Weld Test after training. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Below are examples of the type of duties you could be responsible for: Own and help improve our performance in Safety, Quality, and DeliveryCarbon Steel /Aluminum / Stainless Steel MIG and/or TIG weld at a level that meets quality standardsRead engineering prints, weld symbols, and follow specificationsBasic operator preventative maintenance for welding related equipmentManeuvering in tight and small spacesWork at heights of 15-20 ft. This position is for Machine Shop Salvage Welder Team Lead within the Large Power Systems Division located in our Lafayette, IN facility. Machine Shop Salvage Welder will be required to arc weld cast iron, ductile iron, and steel. Will be required to become level 1 magnaflux certified. Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: • Perform and certify advanced welding on cast iron and ductile iron components, including repair, fabrication, and maintenance. • Required to become level 1 magnaflux certified • Interpret and work from blueprints, JIS’s, CMM data, technical drawings, and welding specifications. • Interpret and use MOP’s, rework procedures, WPS, and acceptance criteria for all Value Streams • Will be required to understand NCM system and generate NCM tags. • Utilize appropriate welding processes such as stick (SMAW), MIG, TIG, brazing, and nickel rod welding for cast iron and ductile materials. • Inspect welds for accuracy, structural soundness, and compliance with quality standards. • Lead and mentor a team of welders and fabricators, providing training and technical guidance. • Assign tasks, monitor workflow, and ensure timely project completion. • Maintain high standards of safety, housekeeping, and equipment care. • Collaborate with supervisors, engineers, and project managers to meet production and quality goals. • Troubleshoot welding issues and recommend process improvements. • Ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA standards, and industry regulations. • 1st (7:30am-3:30pm) with expectations of working a half hour early and over for line-ups and shift handovers • Leading team on daily PQVC metrics • Daily meetings • Reporting out daily rework completed NOTE #1: • The successful candidate must become cast iron and ductile weld certified within 6 months of job acceptance. Failure to complete this requirement will result in removal from 6409 rework. NOTE #2: • Successful candidates will go through mandatory specific classroom training and hands on training that will require a proficiency test and score or through observation by the trainer, leader, or other personnel. NOTE #3: • After successful classroom training and on-the-job training, there will be on-the-job skill assessments that technicians must pass to move onto an L5 technician. Basic Qualifications: • 5+ years’ experience in welding • Strong knowledge of metallurgy, welding techniques, and repair methods for cast and ductile materials. • Previous leadership or supervisory experience in a fabrication or welding environment. • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documents. • Proficient in using welding equipment, grinders, cutting torches, and related tools. • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and team leadership skills. • Strong commitment to safety and quality standards. • Certification(s) in welding (AWS or equivalent) preferred. • Manage time and work well with those on all shifts, including support personnel. • Working necessary overtime. Physical Requirements: • Candidates for all positions must have the ability to work with medium to heavy duty tooling, equipment, and in a highly technical environment. • Work may involve frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling, twisting, turning, climbing, and standing on concrete for 8+ hours. • All positions also require the ability to lift 40 pounds and withstand frequent repetitive movement of hands with a variety of tooling. • Some positions require the ability to perform tasks on a moving conveyor under time constraints. • Some positions require the ability to climb ladders, stairs, work on platforms and work at heights. • Some positions require the ability to work in confined spaces. • Some positions require the ability to wear a respirator. • Must be able to lift and manipulate engine components during the assembly process. • Must be able to use hand and pneumatic tools as well as automatic torque equipment.
