POSITION OVERVIEW: The Welder Setup Operator is responsible for welding production orders or components using MIG and TIG processes to meet customer and quality specifications. This involves using training or knowledge of welding techniques, knowledge of set-up requirements and meeting established production requirements on a consistent basis. PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES: • Read previously prepared setup sheets and routing package for individual parts. Determines what tooling is needed and where it is located. • Follows established set-up requirements and ensures settings are correct. • Receives approval on setup pieces as required. • Operates machine to run production and perform quality inspections as required by the written Quality Procedures. Makes necessary adjustments during production runs to stay in tolerances. • May use templates, fixtures, surface plate, calipers, snap gauges, or other inspection tools to measure welded components, bead size, or other necessary dimensions per blueprint. Watches for presence of burn through, cold starts, lack of penetration, bead size, or other indications of suspect welds. • Complete records of production including scrap or rework reasons. • Move parts to the subsequent operation with pallet jack. • Assists Group leader in writing new or changing existing Setup Sheets. May assist Engineering in developing new processes and trying out new tooling. • Participate in the corrective action process to prevent defects from recurring. • Follow procedures consistently to obtain repeatability. • Participate in team meetings seeking continuous improvements for the operation. • Observe all safety and OSHA procedures and standards. Maximum lifting of 25lb without assistance. SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Responsible for metal fabrication and welding of rolling stock equipment and components in accordance with AWS D15.1, FRA and Amtrak standards and guidelines. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Conducts shielded metal arc or gas metal arc welding processes with low carbon steel, medium carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum • Performs maintenance in accordance with AWS and 49CFR regulations and Amtrak standards • Fabricates fitting of weldments or pieces to be welded with metal machinery such as shear, brake, roll, ironworker, drill press, radiac saw, band saw, used for cutting, bending, drilling, shaping, rolling and punching • Performs various welding operations and thermal cutting to include: SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, oxy/acetylene cutting, plasma arc cutting and carbon arc gouging • Welds with 4’ X 8’ plate ranging from one-eighth to unlimited thickness • Welds with stock to include I-beam, channel, square tubing, angle iron, flat bar, round stock of various sizes.
