HII Platform Modernization (PM) trades teams provide expert solutions on shipboard alterations and installations for fleet modernization. The selected Assistant Fabrication Welder (Tradesperson 1) candidate will support PM, working closely with our skilled trades teams, utilizing various tools of the trade, fabricating, modifying and repairing industrial structural systems and equipment. Selected candidate will work out of our fabrication shop. This is a full-time position, located in Chesapeake, VA. Weekend and/or overtime hours required depending on contract awards and support required as per trade/skill set. What You Will Do • Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement and performance consistent with company values. • Gain valuable trades and life experience as you learn and focus your skills, through the direction of senior technical tradespersons in a variety of industrial fabrication duties, towards NAVSEA Welding Certification. • Perform routine work technical trades duties, under direction, and in accordance with blueprints and technical manuals, to include support of technical repair, installation, maintenance and modification of structures and systems. • Perform semi-skilled and unskilled specific or general duties, such as supplying or holding materials and tools; cleaning working area, machines, equipment and diverse tasks as directed. • Perform semi-skilled and unskilled laboring duties related to the fabrication, maintenance and repair of a wide array of systems and equipment. • Apply job skills and company policies to complete a wide range of tasks that vary based on job, contract, customer requirements, specifications, etc. What You Must Have • High School education and 1 year of related experience, or Trade School or equivalent. • Must have experience welding. • Must be a U.S. Citizen. • Must be able to obtain a DoD security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment. • Must have experience working in a team environment. • Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty. • Must adhere to safety and quality procedures set forth by HII. Preferred: Bonus Points For • Related technical Trade School or experience with structural fabrication, shipfitting, or welding. • Experience comprehending blueprints or engineering sketches. • Prior NAVSEA certified welding experience. • Previous FCAW welding experience. • Previous work related to technical trades. • Candidates who hold a current or active DoD confidential clearance or higher. Physical Requirements Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Most work is performed aboard ships or in industrial conditions. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States. Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C. is hiring a Welder in Chesapeake, Virginia. The Welder is responsible for assisting with fabricating new components and welding, fabricating, retrofitting, and repairing metals and other weldable materials by applying appropriate welding techniques. Seeking candidates with a high school diploma or GED required. Minimum one year experience welding and fabricating on heavy equipment with portable machines. Experience using precision instruments (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, etc.), preferred. Requirements for the Welder position include: • Required skills include welding, boring, fabricating, designing, salvaging and building-up equipment and/or components. General welding and fabrication using gas, stick, MIG and TIG welding.
