Bargaining Unit CSEA Job Summary The Department of Facilities Management and Development at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Trades Specialist (Sheet Metal). Trades Specialists (Sheet Metal) perform journey-level sheet metal work and may supervise others in the repair and manufacture of articles such as steel tables, laboratory equipment, metal cabinets, and air ducts using various types of sheet metal. Illustrative Tasks • Repairs, manufactures and installs a variety of sheet metal ware such as air ducts, cabinets, and laboratory equipment. • Determines the gauge and type metal necessary and dimensions of article to be made, according to specifications, plans, descriptions and instructions. • May requisition material from storehouse. • Marks dimensions and reference lines on metal. • Uses shears, brakes, and bending rolls to cut, bend, and straighten sheet metal. • Shapes metals over anvils, blocks, or forms using hammer. • Solders, welds, or rivets metal together to form desired articles. • Smooths seams, joints, and burred surfaces using files, portable grinders, or buffers. • Inspects completed articles for conformance with instructions, plans, or diagrams. Required Qualifications • Non-competitive: 4-years of full-time experience in the sheet metal trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; • OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in sheet metal work at a school, institute, or branch of Armed Services. • When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated. Preferred Qualifications 55 B/C Qualifications: • Individuals certified eligible for the 55 B/C program under the Governor's Program to Hire Persons/Veterans with Disabilities pursuant to Section 55 B/C of the Civil Service Law will also be considered. Working closely with our technical planners, you will contribute to the development of repair proposals and apply your expertise in aircraft sheet metal work, fasteners, and fabrication techniques. Your Responsibilities • You are responsible for carrying out repairs and modifications to aircraft, structural parts and components made of metal and composite materials in accordance with applicable maintenance documents / repair instructions • Together with our technical planners, you create repair proposals based on manufacturer instructions and technical publications. • You are confident in handling aircraft sheet metal, semi-finished products and common fasteners. • You are curious and willing to learn new procedures and working methods and to develop yourself further. • You support our team of technicians as required with other work that arises in the context of aircraft maintenance. Required Skills, Qualifications, and Experience • Ideally, you have completed training as an aircraft mechanic with good practical skills or alternatively as a construction mechanic, sheet metal worker or metal technician and have several years of professional experience in your field • You have a good command of written and spoken German and English • You are physically resilient, work independently, carefully and reliably, are flexible and a good team player • You have a valid class B driving license

Sheet-Metal Lead

Description: Job Responsibilities • Lead and install sheet metal ductwork systems for HVAC projects, ensuring quality and compliance with plans and specifications. • Read and interpret blueprints, layouts, and SMACNA standards for proper duct installation. • Collaborate with technicians, installers, project managers, and contractors to meet project goals. • Support both new construction and retrofit projects. • Work independently while maintaining communication with the superintendent, builder, and management. • Identify and resolve potential issues proactively to keep projects on schedule. • Help coordinate project scheduling and assign appropriate technician and installer support. • Attend project and team meetings as required.
