Plumber I

This is an entry-level position responsible for the installation, maintenance and service of plumbing systems. Responsible for repairs in trenches or under buildings. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Plumbing Foreperson. Essential Job Functions 1. Installs, repairs and maintains water, gas, air and sewer lines and systems. 2. Installs plumbing pipes, sinks, drain tables and experimental tables. 3. Repairs and maintains valves, faucets, traps, sinks, washbowls, sewers, vents, and toilet fixtures. 4. Cuts and threads pipes and wipes lead joints. 5. Connects and maintains hot water units, gas heaters, and furnaces. 6. Repairs sewer pipes and directs their cleaning. 7. Operates power saws and uses all tools of trade. 8. Works nights, weekends, and on call after hours, as required. Non-Essential Job Functions Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation. 1. Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and equipment for the plumbing trade and the availability, use, and care of various tools required in the trade. 3. Ability to read, interpret and work from rough sketches and drawings. 6. Ability to locate and identify trouble in plumbing lines or equipment and plan repairs. 7. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. 8. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary. 9. Ability to obtain a Texas driver’s license and SFA driver’s certification prior to employment. 10. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties. Physical Demands Required Education High school diploma or equivalent is required. Required Experience and Training One year of skilled/journeyman-level plumbing experience is required. Preferred Qualifications Vocational school, training, or equivalent education is preferred. Interest in becoming a licensed plumber and willingness to study for the journeyman exam is preferred.
