Port Plumber

Applications are now being accepted in the Human Resources office for a Port Plumber in the General Cargo/Intermodal Central Maintenance Division. These jobs are considered day labor positions – not shift work. This position involves skilled plumbing work at port facilities, including the installation, maintenance, and repair of piping, tubing, fittings, and fixtures for heating, water, sewage, steam, boiler, gas, drainage, and fire sprinkler systems. Work is performed according to specifications, plumbing codes, and safety standards. Key Responsibilities: Assemble, install, maintain, and repair pipes, tubing, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, sewage, steam, boiler, gas, drainage, and fire sprinkler systems. Study blueprints, building plans, engineering drawings, and sketches to determine work aids required and sequence of installations and repairs. Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair fire sprinkler systems. Inspect structures to locate and mark pipe and pipe openings; cut and bore holes for pipe placement. Cut, thread, and bend pipe using pipe cutters, cutting torch, threading machine, or bending machine. Assemble and install valves, pipe, and tubing composed of metals (steel, brass, lead, iron) and nonmetals (glass, vitrified clay, polymer-plastics). Install and replace pipe insulation; join pipes and tubing using screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and caulks. Install plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, tubs, showers, water heaters, drinking fountains, and related systems. Maintain and repair plumbing by replacing washers, fixing leaks, mending burst pipes, and clearing drains. Weld holding fixtures to structural members as needed. Assist heating and air conditioning technicians in installation and repair of pipes and tubing associated with HVAC and environmental systems. Perform other duties as assigned Safety Compliance Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines during all training activities. Participate in safety training sessions and demonstrate a commitment to creating a safe working environment Requirements: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Ability to follow oral and written instructions without supervision. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, plans, and sketches. Possession of a valid Alabama driver’s license. Ability to supervise helpers, apprentices, and trainees in the plumbing field. Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work above ground, and lift heavy objects. May require work in dusty environments and in inclement weather. Certifications: State or nationally recognized plumbing trade certification/license.
