ABOUT THE POSITION Under the direction and supervision of the Production Lead, weld metal components with welding equipment to fit and join, fabricate, and/or repair heavy and large mechanical products per specifications and in accordance with the production schedule. Key Deliverables • Adhere to all safety rules and perform work at a quality level • Read and understand assigned blueprints prior to starting a project. • Participate in process and product development and improvement programs. • Accurately inspect metal prior to welding to ensure clean welds. • Perform grinding operations that comply with Astec's standards. • Support team by providing an efficient layout of the plants equipment to ensure proper welding. Key Activities & Responsibilities • Welders are responsible for the layout of plant equipment for welding to ensure proper welding of metal parts. • Welders must be able to safely MIG, TIG, and stick weld, and arc gouging to include passing of test(s). • Must be able to safely perform gang-welding techniques (do's and don'ts). • Must be able to safely weld vertical, flat, and overhead with both MiG and stick. • Must inspect metal prior to welding for smoothness and acceptability and clean welds to presentable state (grinding operations). • Must work with Fitters on proper assembly of equipment. • Inspect welds for quality and proper weld. • Keep work area clean and neat. • Ensure welding machine settings are appropriate for work to be performed. • Must be able to safely use cranes and forklifts. • Must be trained in and know PPE requirements for welding including hood and filter shades and arm/body protection. • Must be able to read and understand weld symbols. • Must select proper rods or wires to perform the welding job. • Must test all hot oil piping for leaks and repairs as necessary. Repairs would be welding related repairs. Inspection includes the safe use of air hose, pressure regulator, and squirt bottle. • Must maintain welding machines by keeping them clean and changing liners in the welding guns. • Follows company policies and procedures at all times. • Follows proper safety rules and procedures at all times. To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are: • High School Diploma or GED required. • Trade school or community college course work preferred. • 2+ years of experience with heavy equipment production line welding. • Computer experience desired, particularly the ability to use a mouse and locate and open/close programs/files. • Knowledge and ability to perform all Grinder tasks required. • Ability to properly and safely MiG weld, stick weld, and arc gouging required. • Ability to read and understand weld symbols required.
