General Summary • Provides highly skilled craft labor, working with tools to install, repair, overhaul, replace and perform preventive maintenance for all types of water, sewer, waste and gas distribution systems. This is a second (2nd) shift position. The regular work hours for this position are 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. The regular work days are Monday through Friday, with Saturday and Sunday off. Major Duties • Installs, repairs and maintains copper, galvanized steel, cast iron, vitreous clay, plastic (PVC) piping and PEX; sewers; drains; sinks, showers, bathtubs, lavatories, and related fixtures; control valves; gauges; water softeners; fire protection systems and sprinkler heads; and other hot and chilled water, natural gas, waste and sewer line components. • Locates and marks positions of existing pipes and pipefittings, and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors; cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipes and pipefittings; cuts and threads pipe; and bends pipe to required angles. • Installs water heaters, water softeners, kitchen and bathroom fixtures; connects water supply; and ensures proper operation. • Removes damaged or deteriorated piping from existing water, natural gas and sewer or waste distribution systems, and installs and connects replacement piping. • Provides information required to update building and systems drawings to accurately reflect current status and, as assigned, may assist in the technical training of an apprentice. • Performs additional duties as requested by supervisory personnel. Minimum Qualifications • High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution. • Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and safety regulations regarding the performance of job duties, and must have sufficient writing and mathematical skills to prepare estimates and supply requisitions. • Completion of a registered apprenticeship program, or an established, certified training program recognized by the University. • Possession of a State of Michigan Plumbing license. • Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license. • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job and use the tools of the trade. • Ability to complete a physical examination administered by the employer’s designated physician.
