Plumbing Inspector

The City of Battle Creek is looking for a Plumbing Inspector to perform work related to plumbing inspections, insuring compliance with existing Federal, State and City regulations, ordinances and codes, reviewing permits, plans, and building specifications, responding to inquiries, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the limited supervision of the Chief Building Official. • Serves as Plumbing Inspector in accordance with Michigan’s adopted Plumbing Codes and City Ordinances. • Inspects plumbing devices and all related installations in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings/facilities for conformance to safety laws, regulations, approved plans, and specifications. • Makes written and oral investigations, reports and recommendations relative to plumbing matters in addition to issuing notification to property owners when code violations are determined. • Confers with property owners or agents to approve plumbing installation plans to determine compliance with code requirements. • Operates test equipment used in the inspection of mechanical and plumbing systems. • Keeps records and prepares reports of inspections and investigations for use by administrative or judicial authorities. • Reviews permit applications, blueprints, plans and specifications to ensure that all plumbing code and ordinance requirements are complied with. • Educates Plumbing Contractors and the public in code compliance requirements. • Investigates complaints regarding installation of Plumbing systems done by unlicensed contractors and work completed without a permit. • Provides a high level of customer service handling inquiries from citizens, contractors, architects, etc., regarding code and ordinance interpretations, clarification of office policies and general questions. • Conducts inspections at the request by Police and Fire staff at incident scenes (may require periodic after-hours callout). • Ability to prepare and objectively analyze comprehensive reports; ability to carry out assigned projects to completion; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City Commission, City employees, and public to include both residents and trade professionals. • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. • Licensed and certified as a Master Plumber or Journeyman Plumber. • 4 years of experience in one or more of the work classifications defined in PA 407 of 2016 as amended. • Valid registration as a Plumber Inspector in the State of Michigan (may substitute ability to be provisionally registered within three (3) months of employment, but must obtain registration at the first available date set by the State of Michigan). Special Requirements: • Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements), reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public, working overtime, and working inside and alone. Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
