Performs skilled work in the repair and alteration of building plumbing and hydro-pneumatic systems. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Works under the supervision of a departmental director or designee who makes assignments and checks work for conformance with established standards. May exercise partial supervision over a few semi-skilled personnel and apprentices. Supervises and participates in installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of plumbing and drainage systems according to specifications and plumbing codes. Supervises and assists in erecting fitting and fixtures for heating systems. Cuts and threads pipes. Utilizes pipe cutters, cutting torches, and pipe-threading machines. Installs and assembles heating systems. Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners. Repairs and maintains plumbing, by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending pipes, and opening clogged drains. May weld anchoring fixtures and devices to steel structural materials. Installs pressure systems, flow valves, and hydro-pneumatic instrumentation on various plumbing systems. Makes estimates of costs relating to plumbing installation and material costs. • Keeps necessary records of service and repairs of assigned equipment. 8. Makes emergency repairs and adjustments. • Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the trade. • Considerable knowledge of the hazards, and precautionary methods peculiar to the trade. • Possession of a valid State of Michigan Plumbers License. • Certification in medical gas systems preferred. • Working knowledge of the Plumbers Code. • Knowledge of medical gas systems and pertinent code requirements. • Manual dexterity to use a variety of hand/power tools. • Ability to work from drawing and specifications and to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions. • Skilled in the use of the tools and the operation of equipment of the trade. • Skilled in locating and adjusting defects in plumbing systems and equipment. • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, climb ladders, etc. • Ability to read blueprints, equipment manuals, etc. • Ability to withstand extremes in temperature, hot water, sewage, etc. • Ability to meet the physical, mental and visual standards of the job. • Ability and willingness to work in a manner that will not needlessly endanger the safety to oneself, other persons, and equipment. • Ability to coordinate assignments and work with other trades. • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with Medical Center personnel, patients, contractors, and the general public.
