Essential Job Functions The pipefitter: • Plans layout of piping for fuel delivery, oil lines, and hydraulic, pneumatic, cooling, heating, water, fire systems, following blueprints, templates, or oral instructions from supervisor. • Measures and cuts pipe to specified length. Cuts access holes in bulkheads, walls, shell plates, structural members, and decks for installation. • Makes cuts primarily with a hand torch, but may also use shop machines to cut and thread pipe and fittings. • Bends pipe or tubing to achieve specified shape for conformity to piping plan using a pipe bender or by placing it in a jig and heating it to obtain the proper dimensions. • Bolts or tack welds hanger brackets to support system. • Connects pipe to fixtures by using screw-type fittings, soldering, tack welding, or by bolting flanges using hand wrenches or power tools. • Aligns parts such as flanges, valves, and piping in relation to each other using jacks, come-a-longs, clamps, clips, wedges, and mauls. • Marks and drills locations for holes. • May be assisted by tacker to tack weld clips, hangers, brackets, or pipe into place prior to final welding. • May use portable power tools such as grinders, chippers, drills, sanders, etc. • Will bevel pipe using a hand torch or pipe-beveling machine. • May test installed systems to ensure that systems meet specifications using hydrostatic or air-supplied testing techniques. • Must be able to perform basic shipfitting duties if needed. • May repair, pack, or adjust valves. • May perform other tasks, including transporting tools, materials, supplies, and parts. The pipefitter may also use overhead cranes and operate company vehicles. Working Conditions Scheduled days cover Monday through Friday with weekends and holidays as required. The pipefitter may be called on to perform work at remote locations other than the shipyard facility. The pipefitter works in all kinds of weather and is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, electrical and mechanical hazards, ultraviolet light, vibration, and noise. The pipefitter may be required to work on scaffolding and ladders at heights, work over water, and work alone and in confined spaces. The pipefitter may be subject to very dramatic temperature changes, such as when entering or exiting a tank. Present in the work environment are fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are all to be worn accordingly. Essential Job Requirements The pipefitter must: • Be able to read and write alphabetically and numerically. • Be able to pass company-specified performance or standards tests. • Have attended vocational school, technical school, or high school or have completed commercial, shop, technical, or on-the-job training. • Be able to provide verifiable references of past work history. • Be authorized to work in the US. Physical Requirements The pipefitter position requires repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, sitting, walking, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking, and an acute sense of smell. The U.S. Dept. of Labor classifies the physical requirements that are associated with this job as being that of medium work – exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for light work.
