Employment Status: Temporary Full Time Department: Facilities Union: UNIFOR - Skilled Trades Job Code: 17949 ✓ Pension ✓ Weekdays JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Building Systems Supervisor, the Plumber will inspect, install, maintain, repair pipes, fittings and plumbing fixtures, to maintain the water, steam, gas and drainage systems at the Hospital Centre. The Plumber complies with the Occupational Health and Safety standards for the hospital and is proactive in promoting a safe work environment. DUTIES: • Inspect, installs, repairs and replace pipes, fittings and plumbing fixtures to maintain the heating, water, gas and draining system of the hospital. • Plans installation by studying blueprints and work sketches to determine kind and size of pipe to use and special fittings necessary. Marks cuttings and bending lines with caulk and cuts pipe layout marking with pipe cutter or hacksaw. Remove burrs or rough edges from pipe with a reamer. Cuts thread on pipe with hand to produce correct curvature. Fit valves, couplings and other specified parts and fittings to pipe sections by screwing, bolting or soldering. Seals connections by forcing sealing material into joints with pneumatic calking hammer or yearning tools. Cuts passage holes in walls and floors, through which pipe is to pass, when an electric hand drill and narrow blade saw. • Installs pipe assemblies and plumbing fixtures. Screws threaded pipe and fitting together with adjoining pip assembles. Bolts flanged sections and solders or caulks connections to make them watertight. Attaches pipe assemblies to walls or ceilings with brackets or hangers. Installs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, showers and water heaters, and connects them to outlet and inlet pipes by fitting gaskets, couplings, traps and valves, and soldering connections to seal joints. • Repairs and maintains piping systems and plumbing fixtures. Inspect all connections and other parts of system for leaks, noting gauge reading to detect loss of pressure. Replaced defective pipe by cutting, bending, threading and assembling pipe. Solder and caulk leaks and broken pipes. Open clogged drains with plumbers snake or vacuum plunger. Thaws frozen pipes with torch. Replaces worn washers or other parts in leaky valves or taps. Repairs autoclaves and other sterilizing equipment. Repairs or replaces damaged fixtures. Perform steam fitting duties such as setting and securing heating units and connection traps, valve and thermostats to pipe system. • Estimates material requirements and costs. Requisitions materials. May train and direct helpers in assembling and installing pipes. • Performs such plumbing repairs, installation and adjustments as his training skills and experience permits. • Other duties as assigned from time to time. QUALIFICATIONS: • Grade XII diploma • Trade or vocational school graduation, with courses in blueprint reading, mathematics, and physics. • A valid certificate of qualification as issued by the Ontario Provincial Government as Plumber. • Must have knowledge of electrical sections of public building and safety codes.
