The Plumber supports the mission of the University and the Physical Plant in operating and maintaining a safe, clean, and efficiently run campus. APPOINTMENT INFORMATION Budgeted Salary: $52.96/hour, Step 1.0. Will increase to Step 2.0 $58.84/hour after successful completion of a 6 month probation. Benefits Level Eligibility: Full benefits Schedule Information: • Full-time, Fixed • Percentage of Time: 100%, 40 Hours per Week • Days of the Week: Mon-Fri • Shift Includes: Day Employee Classification: Career appointment Job End Date: None Work Location: UC Santa Cruz Main Campus Union Representation: K7, Santa Cruz Skilled Craft Job Code Classification: PLUMBER (008258) Travel: Never or Rarely JOB DUTIES 65% - Plumbing • Performs the duties of a journey-level plumber for all Campus building systems. • Repairs, installs, adjusts, maintains, and replaces all plumbing fixtures and related piping. • Performs roddering, snaking, and high-pressure water jet roddering to piping drain systems, which requires soldering, welding, fusing, pipe fitting, threading, and fabrication. • Performs all work within current plumbing codes. • Reads blueprints and diagrams and follows written Preventative Maintenance programs. • Drives a University vehicle to transport materials and tools to campus work areas. 20% - Maintenance • Performs duties of a journey-level fitter for underground utilities construction and maintenance. • Performs maintenance, repairs, and installations on the campus water distribution system, natural gas distribution system, and sanitary sewer system. • Operates jackhammers, tampers, cuts/threads pipe, operates concrete saw cutters, shovels, digs, excavates, backfills. 10% - Safety • Performs safety inspections and routine maintenance on tools and equipment used and on assigned vehicles. • Attends safety and training classes and performs job-related tasks in a safe manner. • Follows all product and University-specific safety procedures when using tools and equipment. 5% - Inventory • Writes and maintains a weekly timesheet. • Employs effective interpersonal skills when interacting with members of the campus community. • Helps the Physical Plant mechanics and supervisors maintain an inventory of shop materials, supplies, and tools by informing them of specific needs. • Reviews project submittals that are relevant to plumbing and plumbing infrastructure. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • Experience and or skills equivalent to a qualified journey level plumber. • Ability to maintain, use, repair, install, and construct building plumbing systems, gas piping, sewer systems, plumbing fixtures, food service equipment, including soldering, brazing, sewer and drain piping snakes and rodders, and high-pressure water jet machinery. • Ability to maintain and repair natural gas systems, water systems, and sewer systems related to underground utility systems. • Ability to provide journey-level skills to maintain equipment, tools, and machinery. • Ability to read and fabricate plumbing systems from drawings and blueprints. • Knowledge of state and federal uniform plumbing codes and CAL OSHA codes. • Good written communication when interacting with members of the campus community. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Documented plumbing apprenticeship through an employer with a C-36 Plumbing Contractors License that is registered with the CSLB of California. Required Qualifications • High school diploma or equivalent. • Formal accredited apprenticeship to plumber trade or equivalent. • Industrial plumbing experience with general knowledge of plumbing practices, tools, materials and methods. • Familiarity with pumps, pressure control valves, steam traps and flow monitoring gear. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office. • Strong troubleshooting, communication, teamwork, organization and time-management skills. Preferred Qualifications • Trade school or equivalent diploma. • Experience with steam fitting and/or automatic fire sprinkler maintenance. • Familiarity with uniform plumbing code, uniform mechanical code and NFPA 13. • Prior food, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical industry experience. • Bilingual in English/Spanish.
