CERTIFIED PIPE WELDER/FITTER

NOTE: Minimum high school diploma or GED equivalent is required. PIPE - WELDER Primary Purpose: Layout, fits, cuts and welds all types of piping and steel supports which will require certification. Typical Duties: Selects equipment and plans layout, assembly, and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining weld shrinkage, and welding techniques. Lay out, positions, aligns, and fits components together. Bolts, clamps and tack-welds parts to secure in position of welding. Sets up equipment and welds parts, using arc, gas-shielded arc, submerge arc, or gas welding equipment. May assemble parts by bolting and riveting. May repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts, using cutting torch, straightening press, and handtools. Requirements: Workers should be able to; rate information using standards that can be measured or checked; Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy; Look at flat drawings, pictures, and blueprints and visualize how they would look as solid objects with height, width, and depth; See detail in objects or drawings and recognize slight differences in shapes or shadings; and work easily and skillfully with hands. Physically, workers must be able to; Lift and carry objects weighing no more than 150 pounds, with frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds; aimb up on and balance on ladders, scaffolding or stairs; See well (either naturally or with correction); Stand for long periods; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl to reach hard to get at work areas; and use hands and arms to reach for, grasp, and manipulate objects. PIPEFITTER Primary Purpose: Lays out, fabricates, assembles, installs, and maintains pipe and piping systems, fixtures, and equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, and industrial processing systems. Typical Duties: Selects type and size of pipe and related materials according to job specifications. Inspects worksites to determine presence of obstructions and to ascertain that holes will not cause structural weakness. Installs & maintains refrigeration and air-conditioning systems including compressors, pumps, meters, pneumatic and hydraulic controls, and piping. Tests piping system for leaks by increasing pressure in pipes and observing gauges attached to pipes for indications of leaks. May weld holding fixtures to structural steel members. PLUMBER Primary Purpose: Assembles, installs, and repairs pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes. Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass, and lead, and non metals, such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic, using handtools and power tools. Joins pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and calks joints. Fills pipe system with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking.
