Summary: Performs skilled work of moderate to significant difficulty in the installation, maintenance, and operation of plumbing systems, medical gas systems, steam and condensate systems, fire suppression/sprinkler systems and steam boiler systems. Responsibilities: 1. Install, repair and maintain all facility plumbing lines and equipment, including hot and cold water and drain lines, sinks, commodes and connecting facilities. Install, repair and maintain fire prevention and containment water lines, sprinklers and system connections. 2. Install, repair and maintain facility steam and condensate lines, steam traps, pressure reducing valves and flash tanks. 3. Install, repair and maintain medical gas systems. 4. May assume lead role and some supervisory duties including field supervision and assignment of work duties on specific projects or maintenance tasks. 5. Perform operational tests on plumbing, steam, sprinkler and medical gas systems in accordance with industry standards, building codes and JCAHO requirements and perform tests to meet state and UNC Hospitals operating and maintenance requirements and parameters 6. Review construction plans and install facilities, equipment and materials in accordance with plans and to meet state, Life Safety and federal codes. 7. Select suitable plumbing and plumbing related materials and equipment to match existing systems and facilities, and install, operate and maintain new systems. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: • Assumes secondary responsibility for the safe condition of pipes, drains, and plumbing fixtures in the facilities owned or operated by the district. • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, commodes, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dish-washers, and water softeners. • Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains. • Maintenance of outdoor sprinklers, waste disposal systems, radiators, and similar plumbing-related installations. • Studies building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence installation. • Locates and marks position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors, using ruler, spirit level, and plumb bob. • Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings, using hand tools and power tools. • Cuts, threads, assembles, and installs pipe, using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and pipe threading machine. • Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals and non-metals. • Fills pipe system with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking. • Installs partitions in bathrooms. • Receives work orders and confers with supervisor to plan and review work projects. • Examines district-owned facilities on a regular basis for purposes of preventative maintenance. • Responds to emergency calls as appropriate. • Performs other duties as assigned.
