About the position This is skilled manual work involving pipe fitting within the water & sewer field services department; work involves the efficient plumbing and pipefitting practices in repairing and installing lines, taps, hydrants, and related appurtenances; operates necessary tools and equipment used in repair process; assists other personnel in troubleshooting the system and recommends solutions to known problems; may lead subordinates on specific jobs; completes daily reports as required by supervisor; works more than 40 hours when emergency exists or when necessary and works with knowledge of exposure to fumes, odors, dust and with a risk of bodily injury and in various weather conditions; shall be on call when necessary. Responsibilities • Installs fittings, valves, pipe hydrants and other appurtenances or components relative to a potable water transmission and distribution system. , • Operates crew vehicles and dump trucks as required. , • Operates tapping equipment, pipe saws, miscellaneous tools, etc. used in maintenance and repair work. , • Responsible for inventory of tools, fittings, material, etc. on assigned vehicle. , • Performs minor maintenance on equipment and vehicle when required. , • Assists in troubleshooting the system and recommends methods of repair. , • Completes required daily reports. , • When not pipefitting, works as a laborer or semi-skilled laborer. , • Refers any mechanical problems with vehicles to supervisor. , • Advises supervisor of problems and needs of the department. , • On occasional or relief basis or as training for future operation of more complex equipment, operates backhoe, end loader, etc. , • Responsible for cleanliness and light maintenance of assigned equipment. , • Does all other work as assigned. Requirements • High school diploma or equivalent. , • Experience as a plumber/pipefitter or 3 years' experience and training in knowledge of pipefitting. , • Must possess a valid Class B CDL with tanker and air brakes endorsements or must obtain CDL permit within 180 days and a CDL license with air brakes and tanker endorsement within one year of hire date. , • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities is also acceptable.
