This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary. • Responds to work orders for repair of plumbing fixtures within County facilities. • Installs and/or repairs pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, water heaters, water coolers and other plumbing fixtures such as sinks, faucets and toilets. • Analyzes defects or malfunctions in plumbing systems, identifies the problem and performs the necessary repairs. • Reviews building plans and inspects structures to assess material and equipment needed for the installation of pipes. • Inspects and repairs circulating pumps and recommends replacement as needed. • Provides cost estimates for repairs, installations, and maintenance. • Orders and maintains required materials and supplies. • Demonstrates, models, and actively engages in the alignment and execution of the County's Strategic Plan Initiatives to ensure the objectives of the core goals are achieved to benefit Durham County employees, citizens, and the environment. • Performs related work as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: • General knowledge of the methods of installation and repair of plumbing systems. • General knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, tools, terminology and safety precautions of building maintenance trades. • General knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials. • Skill in the operation of various tools and equipment used in multiple trades. • Ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications. • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and maintain records. • Ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs. • Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: • High School Graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by two (2) years of technical training in plumbing. • Two (2) years of plumbing or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
