SUMMARY Under general supervision, this position operates construction equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and installation of water mains, valves, fire hydrants, taps, and other aspects of water/sewer systems. Works with a small crew and performs considerable manual labor with the crew as needed. This position must be available to work on a rotating shift, including nights, evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather essential personnel. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES • Operates equipment to dig in confined areas (streets, alleys, easements, etc.) where other utilities are installed without interruption and/or damage. • Ensures the proper inspection, maintenance, and operation of trucks, trailers, and other various types of assigned equipment. • Assists in the repair and construction of sewer lines, manholes, taps, and helps rod sewer mains. • Works in trenches ranging in depth from 3' to 35' deep, follows all trench shoring procedures, and understands the dangers of working in or around trenches. • Accurately follows oral and/or written instructions. • Accurately reads, interrupts, and understands maps and/or drawings. • Assists crews throughout job tasks. • Properly completes daily job reports. • Responds to 24-hour emergency callouts and rotating shifts when necessary. • Performs manual labor when necessary to assist in the performance of various tasks or other duties as assigned. • Performs other job-related duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent (GED). A valid Texas Class C Driver's License is required. Must obtain a Class A Texas Commercial Driver's License within one (1) year from hire date. Experience in water works or utilities preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES • Ability to operate and make minor repairs to backhoe, 2.5-ton truck with trailer, air compressor, water pumps, jackhammers, air tamps, pipe cutter, portable generator, tap machine, drills, various hand tools, and shoring equipment. • Ability to read and understand maps, use GIS and other location equipment, and understand grades and percentages of grades. • Ability to read and understand sewer maps; ability to understand grades and percentage of grades on sewer main to prevent overflowing when cleaning lines. • Knowledge of safety equipment needed to perform job duties. • Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting.
