Job Summary The University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks a skilled Stonemason/Mason to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, repair, and preventive maintenance of various masonry materials on walls, stairs, catch basins, gate/water valves, form work, and related structures. Essential Functions: • Lays stone, brick, and cement blocks using hand and power tools to build, alter, repair, and maintain brick and concrete surfaces and structures. • Works with Goshen Stone, granite, brick, and concrete pavers to build or repair dry laid stonewalls, sidewalks, stairs, or catch basins. • Prepares surfaces for concrete work. • Repairs masonry on stairs, catch basins, water/gate valves, and walls with concrete. • Pours concrete in molds or forms to make slabs or blocks. • Mixes mortar and concrete by hand or using a portable mixer. • Reads and interprets blueprints/drawings to determine specifications and materials required for a project. • Uses straight edges, rules, and staked lines to lay out a foundation or wall pattern. • Mixes specified proportions of cement, sand, and water to obtain grout used in fusing stone pieces together. • Lays and aligns stones according to set construction plans and specifications. • Applies and spreads mortar on slabs/surfaces using a trowel. • Cuts, shapes, and smooths rock materials using abrasive saw and power grinders. • Operates cranes, hoists, and other lifting equipment to move monument sections from a truck bed onto a foundation. • Positions construction forms or mold along the guidelines of walls. • Lining mold interior with treated paper and fills with composition-stone mixture. • Constructs and installs prefabricated stone carvings/masonry units for buildings. • Uses a pick and shovel to dig trenches or holes for monument foundation. • Sets and verifies the vertical and horizontal alignment of structures with the aid of levels and plumb bob. • Smooths mortar using a tucker point to achieve an attractive finish. • Replaces defective or missing masonry units on walls or floors. • Cleans the surface of marble/stone structures using a sponge, brush, water, or chemical solution. • Operates a state vehicle to travel to a work site. • Participates in snow removal operations.
