Position Description The HVAC Sheet Metal Journeyman position is responsible for the entire process of replacing HVAC systems. They will need to be comfortable with all facets of a new installation, including: ordering materials, scheduling crane service and permit inspections, demoing existing equipment to be replaced, prepping any new equipment to be installed, and performing the installation process itself. This work may include working off ladders, roofs, lifts, and on the ground. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Thorough understanding and proper use of air tools, sanding discs, scotch-brite, flapper wheels, drum rolls, for polishing parts to present to final inspection. • Thorough understanding of disk sanders, belt sanders, scribe tools, Quackenbush cutters, hose clamps, calipers, micrometers, scales, tin snips, riveting equipment for sizing metal components to precise dimensions. • Understanding of the use of weld plugs. • Thorough understanding of the effect of heat as it pertains to welded metal assemblies. • Maintain work area and equipment in a clean, orderly, FOD-free fashion and adhere to all safety standards. • Provide guidance and job knowledge to Metal Fabricator 1 and Metal Fabricator 2. • This job description is not all-inclusive; other duties may be assigned as per the Metal Fabricator Job Family within the new Job Family Structure. Specialist Level Requirements: • Assist in developing techniques to increase productivity, quality, and throughput, and share job knowledge within the department. Special Requirements for Space Products: • Capable of safely handling large, heavy parts and fixtures. • Must pass crane safety training. • Provide guidance to other personnel in the space department. • Able to operate trim tooling for large ducting. • Read Pi-tapes and large-scale measuring equipment. Special Requirements for Ball Joints: • Supply work to spot and seam welders and ball joint fabricators. • Perform repairs and troubleshooting. • Knowledge of expanding dies/expander. • Ability to fabricate ball joints (gimbal joints). Education and Experience: • Must have completed all requirements for Metal Fabricator 1 and 2. • HS Diploma or equivalent; previous experience may substitute education. • Preferred: Previous sheet metal fabrication experience. • Minimum 2-year requirement in Metal Fabricator 2 for bid eligibility. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Understanding of fabrication/fitting techniques considering print dimensions after welding. • Knowledge of heat effects on parts in resistance-spot and GTAW welding. • Ability to read blueprints. • Strong communication skills. • Ability to follow instructions and understand manufacturing documentation. • Proficient with measuring instruments. • Understanding of procedures for polishing, cleaning, and assembly. • Ability to share knowledge with lower progressions.
