Sheet Metal Worker – Job Description Position Summary A Sheet Metal Worker is responsible for fabricating, assembling, and installing metal components used in HVAC systems, roofing, siding, architectural details, and various industrial applications. Work may occur in a fabrication shop, on construction sites, or both. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, precision, and adherence to safety standards. Primary Duties & Responsibilities Shop Duties • Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and work orders. • Fabricate ductwork, fittings, flashings, gutters, downspouts, and architectural sheet metal components. • Operate sheet metal machinery including brakes, shears, notchers, roll formers, plasma/Laser CNC tables, and coil lines. • Measure, cut, bend, and form sheet metal to exact specifications. • Assemble components using rivets, screws, welds, and other fastening methods. • Perform quality checks to ensure accuracy and consistency of fabricated materials. • Maintain shop equipment through cleaning, lubrication, and basic preventive maintenance. • Follow proper material handling procedures and maintain an organized work area. Field Installation Duties • Install ducts, HVAC equipment connections, hangers, supports, and air distribution components. • Install architectural sheet metal systems including roofing, siding, coping, fascia, soffit, gutters, and downspouts. • Lay out and measure work areas using levels, lasers, plumb bobs, chalk lines, and tape measures. • Fit, align, and secure metal components using hand tools, power tools, and fastening systems. • Seal ductwork to meet project specifications and SMACNA standards. • Coordinate with other trades and follow project schedules. • Perform jobsite safety checks and comply with OSHA and company safety practices. • Troubleshoot installation issues and provide solutions to supervisors or foremen. Job Requirements Education & Experience • High school diploma or GED required. • Experience in construction, manufacturing, HVAC, or related trades is an asset. Skills & Competencies • Ability to read blueprints, mechanical drawings, and specifications. • Strong understanding of basic math, fractions, and measurement. • Proficiency using hand tools, portable power tools, and sheet metal machinery. • Knowledge of SMACNA standards for fabrication and installation. • Ability to lift 50–75 lbs., work at heights, and perform physical labor. • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality work. • Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team. • Problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing jobsite conditions. Certifications (Preferred but Not Required) • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 • Forklift or aerial lift training • Welding certifications (GMAW, GTAW, SMAW) • First Aid/CPR Work Environment • Work may be indoors (shop), outdoors, or on active construction sites. • Exposure to noise, heights, ladders, lifts, and varying weather conditions. • Use of PPE including safety glasses, gloves, hard hat, boots, and hearing protection.
