Utility Plumber

We’re all about doing good work and helping each other succeed. How You’ll Contribute As a Utility Plumber, you'll play a key role in maintaining and improving our city's essential infrastructure. Working under general supervision, you'll apply your journeyman-level expertise to install, maintain, and repair water distribution and sewage collection systems. You’ll have the autonomy to use your professional judgment in selecting the most effective work methods, all while ensuring compliance with the Illinois State Plumbing Code and applicable ordinances. In addition, you may take the lead in guiding or instructing other team members as they assist with similar plumbing tasks. • Install, repair, and maintain water service lines, sewer laterals, mains, curb valves, and related appurtenances. • Install and service plumbing systems including hot and cold-water lines, sewer and soil pipes, traps, and fixtures such as toilets, sinks, urinals, showers, and bathtubs. • Operate excavation and construction equipment, including trenchers, backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, air compressors, jackhammers, drills, grinders, welders, acetylene torches, and a variety of hand tools. • Direct trenching and backfilling operations at job sites. • Conduct building surveys and maintain records for the cross-connection control program. • Test, repair, and maintain City-owned cross-connection control devices. • Coordinate work with City staff and property owners; communicate and interpret applicable codes, standards, and ordinances. • Maintain accurate repair records in both digital and hard copy formats. • Serve as backup for the plumbing inspector and water distribution crew leader, as needed. • Perform duties related to water distribution mechanic responsibilities, as assigned. • Carry out other related duties as assigned. • Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Thorough understanding of plumbing systems, including relevant theories, principles, techniques, and equipment. • In-depth knowledge of the Illinois State Plumbing Code and related municipal ordinances. • Familiarity with applicable safety standards and awareness of potential job site hazards. • Proficient in the safe and effective use of hand tools, power tools, and excavation equipment. • Skilled in interpreting and working from blueprints, specifications, and system records for water distribution and wastewater transmission. • Competent in the use of personal computers and mobile devices within network environments. • Experienced with software applications such as ArcMap GIS, Tele-Ticket, Lucity Work, and Microsoft Office. • Capable of instructing and directing work crews effectively at job sites. • Strong skills in public relations, employee engagement, and labor relations. • Able to plan and coordinate plumbing-related projects with minimal supervision. • Clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and written. • Ability to respond to inquiries and complaints in a professional and timely manner. • Fully able to perform all duties typically required of a journeyman plumber. Education & Experience • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered. • High school diploma or GED equivalent required. • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a licensed plumber. • At least two (2) years of experience in mechanical maintenance work related to: • Plumbing systems • Water distribution systems • Sanitary sewer collection system installations and repairs • Fieldwork involving excavations Licenses and Certifications • Valid Illinois Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or equivalent within 45 days after hire. • Valid State of Illinois Plumbing Inspector Certification within six (6) months of hire. • Valid State of Illinois Cross-Connection Control Inspector’s Certification issued by the Illinois EPA Division of Public Water Supplies within 90 days of hire.
