About the position The Mechanical, Plumbing, & Controls Inspector position at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a full-time role within the Engineering Services department. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide skilled inspections required by code for university construction projects, ensuring compliance with the design intent and the university's current adopted codes and standards. The inspector will coordinate with various parties, including Code Compliance and Fire Safety, to conduct necessary inspections and manage conditions related to Certificates of Occupancy. Additionally, the role involves commissioning mechanical, plumbing, and controls work, as well as conducting plan reviews for select projects. The inspector will work on project assignments as directed by the Lead Inspector or Construction Superintendent and will collaborate closely with the project team and Associate Directors of Code Compliance and Fire Safety. The duties of the inspector include performing inspections and commissioning for new construction and renovation projects, reviewing project documents such as contracts, specifications, and drawings, and coordinating with university personnel, contractors, and engineers regarding job progress. The inspector will also be responsible for documenting mechanical and plumbing inspections, coordinating control issues, attending construction coordination meetings, and reporting deficiencies to the Construction Superintendent and Project Manager. Furthermore, the inspector will assist in the training of Commissioning & Inspection staff on control systems work and will be involved in the review of change order estimates and the assessment of existing control systems in campus buildings. In addition to the primary responsibilities, the inspector will engage in small construction service project inspections, performing progress and final inspections of mechanical and plumbing work, and will conduct detailed reviews of projects designed by outside consultants, preparing written comments for non-compliance with codes or university standards. The position requires a high level of technical knowledge, mobility to access various construction site areas, and proficiency in reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications. The inspector must also demonstrate excellent communication skills, time management abilities, and a commitment to professionalism and teamwork. Responsibilities • Perform mechanical and plumbing trade and control system inspections for construction projects. , • Review project documents, including contracts, specifications, and drawings. , • Coordinate and respond to questions with U of I personnel, contractors, and engineers on job progress. , • Conduct routine mechanical and plumbing inspections, walk-throughs, demonstrations, and training for U of I personnel. , • Coordinate DDC warranty alarms between the U of I and contractors. , • Manage LEED documentation with the U of I, contractors, and professional consultants. , • Document mechanical and plumbing inspections and commissioning activities, following up on action items and corrections. , • Attend construction coordination meetings as required. , • Perform progress and final inspections for construction projects. , • Assist in facilitating corrective actions on warranty issues with contractors. , • Report deficiencies to the C&I Construction Superintendent and Project Manager. , • Track and assist in resolving mechanical and plumbing trade items during the warranty phase. , • Review DDC temperature control systems and graphical screens during construction and commissioning phases. , • Compile shop drawing and inspection comments throughout the project. , • Provide or assist in programming control systems. , • Collaborate with energy services to resolve energy and controls issues. , • Review change order estimates and assist in developing scope of work during proposal walkthroughs. , • Perform assessments of existing control systems in campus buildings for operation and compatibility. , • Assist in updates to University Facilities Standards. , • Meet with review team members and stakeholders to discuss project changes and requirements. , • Follow-up and inspect projects, relay code violations, and approve or disapprove final payments. Requirements • High school diploma or equivalent. , • Five (5) years of progressive practical experience in responsible charge, including direction, inspection, and supervision of mechanical equipment installation. , • Thorough understanding of mechanical, plumbing, and control systems. , • General knowledge of building systems including electrical, elevators, sprinklers, fire alarms, etc. , • Ability to read, navigate, and interpret construction drawings and technical specifications. , • Extensive knowledge of university adopted building codes, standards, and current construction procedures/technology. , • Ability to make difficult decisions/code interpretations and provide documentation for project files. , • Basic knowledge of using Microsoft Office products and Adobe products. , • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. , • Ability to manage workload and appointments effectively. Nice-to-haves • International Code Council - Commercial Building Inspector and/or Commercial Plumbing Inspector certifications. , • Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree in construction and/or design related field. , • 5+ years of building inspection experience. , • Completed an OSHA Training course, preferably a 10-hour course.
