The incumbent installs maintains and repairs water, steam, gas and fuel or other types of pipe and pipefittings. Keeps supervisor apprised of unique situations and problems encountered and identify and reports safety, environmental and other work requirements for resolution. JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Inspections and assessments of piping systems, reporting those conditions to the supervisor and performing the pipe repair work requests issued by the supervisor. • Investigate and identify facility gas leaks including compressed air, steam and other similar facility utilities. Repair water and steam pipe leaks or other identified problems. Install sampling ports for air desiccant breathers. • Performs a variety of pipefitting trade functions such as the installation, maintenance, or repair of water, steam, gas, or other types of pipe and pipefittings according to specifications and plumbing code. • Incumbent understands steam/water flow characteristics and theory of operation; able to apply these applications of all associated equipment such as pumps, traps, strainers, regulators and safety valves. • Lays out work and measures to locate position of pipe from drawings or other written specifications, cutting various sizes of pipe to correct lengths with an oxyacetylene torch, or pipe cutting machines. • Test piping systems for leaks by increasing pressure in pipes and observing gauges attached to pipes for indication of leaks. • Threads pipe with stocks and dies, assembles pipe with couplings and fastens pipe to hangers. • Fabricates and welds pipe supports, hangers and brackets and secures to structural steel members. • Performs standard shop computations relating to pressures, flow, and size of pipe required. Performs standard tests to determine whether finished pipes meet specifications. • Utilizes and interprets technical manuals, shop directives, blueprints, sketches, diagrams, and specifications, verbal and written instructions. • Adheres to proper security practices, foreign object damage procedures and airfield driving regulations, as applicable.
