Position Information Position Title Plumber I/II Banner Position Number 001131 E-Class CN - Class Nonexempt FT .53 or > Classification Title Plumber Department Facilities & Operations Admin - MU5200 Job Description The plumber performs skilled technical work in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of domestic water systems, heating water systems, sanitary sewer systems, storm sewers, gas pipe, steam and condensate pipes, and fire protection systems in all University structures and grounds following recognized procedures and techniques of the plumbing trade. The plumber maintains the heating, water, gas and plumbing systems using hand and power tools such as sewer auger or vacuum plunger, acetylene torch, soldering equipment, sewer camera, pipe locator, and related plumbing tools. The plumber also practices preventive maintenance of plumbing tools and equipment, and complies with federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials common to the plumbing trade. Plumber I: For applicants without a trades license. Plumber II: For applicants holding a valid Plumbing Journeyman license. Required Qualifications: • High School Diploma/GED • West Virginia Plumbing Journeyman License for Plumber II. • 2 years' experience as a Commercial/Industrial Plumber. • Valid Driver's License General Duties: • Performs work in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of heating, water, gas line, plumbing, sanitary sewer systems, storm sewers, gas pipe (both threaded and fusion welded), steam and condensate pipes, and fire protection systems. • Apply, remove, and repair insulation on industrial equipment, pipes, duct work, or other mechanical systems such as heat exchangers, tanks, and vessels, to help control noise and maintain temperatures. • Repairs or replaces damaged plumbing fixtures such as but not limited to sinks, toilets, showers, bathtubs, water heaters, electronic flush valves and faucets, and drinking fountains or connects them to outlet and inlet pipes by making adjustments to pumps, regulators, and associated piping, threading, bending, or fusion welding pipe either by hand or by use of power equipment, screwing, bolting or fitting gaskets, couplings, traps and valves, soldering, lead wiping, and/or acetylene cutting and welding connections to seal joints where necessary. • Performs moderate electrical work to connect, disconnect, service, and troubleshoot pumps, heaters, boilers, and related equipment. • Provides means of access through walls, floors, and other structures as may be required by dismantling or cutting through structural and other physical barriers in order to gain access for repairs or for new installations. • Operates power tools, hand tools, air compressors, jackhammers, backhoes, ditch witch, man lifts, sewer auger or vacuum plunger, acetylene torch, soldering and welding tools, pipe threaders and cutters, gas leak detector, sewer camera. • Inspects and tests plumbing systems for safety, functionality, and code compliance. • Maintains knowledge of state, federal, and local codes and requirements. • Interprets schematic drawings, blueprints, OM manuals, and vendor manufacturing literature. • Restores assigned work sites to their original condition at the completion of work by removing tools, materials, and debris, drop cloths, and tarpaulins used during the project, returning furniture and equipment to their proper location, setting up equipment that had been dismantled, and coordinating the cleaning, painting, or replacing tile(s) and other structural effects through which holes have been cut. • Completes truck and shop inventories as assigned. • Cleans, and organizes storage areas, boiler rooms, and equipment rooms. • Repairs, cleans, and maintains shop equipment, tools, and vehicles. • Adhere to current rules and regulations related to plumbing to ensure systems pass inspection. • Required overtime and emergency call out situations. • Performs other duties as assigned deemed necessary to meet the needs of Marshall University including performance of work in support of other shops/trades. • This job description indicates the general nature and level of work performed by employees in this role.
