Fitter/Welder Associate 2 (Day Shift)

About the position Vigor Alaska is seeking a Fitter/Welder Associate 2 to join our team in Ketchikan, Alaska. This position is integral to our operations, where you will be responsible for performing welding and fitting tasks on vessels according to ship specifications and work orders. The role requires a strong commitment to safety and environmental measures, as you will be working in a shipyard environment that demands adherence to strict safety protocols. You will work both independently and as part of a multi-craft crew, ensuring that all job specifications are met efficiently and effectively. As a Fitter/Welder Associate 2, you will utilize your skills in various welding techniques, including Arc welding (SMAW, FCAW, GMAW) and carbon arc gouging for weld preparation and cleanup. You will also be responsible for performing burning tasks and using hand and power tools safely and effectively. Your ability to read and interpret blueprints and working drawings will be crucial in ensuring that all work is completed to the highest standards. Additionally, you will be expected to communicate effectively with team members and contribute to a positive work environment. This position offers opportunities for growth and advancement within the company, as you will be required to acquire additional ship repair skills to progress to higher levels. Responsibilities • Comply with craft and shipyard safety and environmental measures. , • Work from ship specifications, work orders, and applicable working drawings and blueprints. , • Research and suggest solutions to conditions requiring comprehensive condition found reports (CFRs). , • Perform burning and effectively use scarfing tip for cleanup, bevel parts, etc. , • Perform Arc welding - SMAW, FCAW, GMAW. , • Perform carbon arc gouging for weld preparation and cleanup. , • Properly care for and safely use hand and power tools. , • Coordinate the performance and completion of job specifications. , • Perform similar work in all areas of the Yard as the need arises. Requirements • High School diploma or GED preferred. , • 2-6 years relevant work experience. , • Proven skills, work history and/or applicable education will be considered in lieu of work experience. , • Welder - Certifiable in 11018, dual shield and SMAW. , • Four-hour fire watch certification. , • HAZWOPER - First Responder Awareness Level. , • Ability to do basic math, including fractions. , • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English. , • Thorough knowledge of marine fitting including compound shapes. Nice-to-haves • Experience with rigging under the direction of a Journey Level employee or Supervisor. , • Experience with mechanical bolting under the direction of a Journey Level employee or Supervisor.
