Distinguishing Career FeaturesThe Public Works Laborer I is the first and starting level in a career path for maintenance and construction of public works that includes predominately roadways and walkways construction and maintenance. Laborer I will be qualified to assist with Laborer II in any skill area, however, will concentrate on general labor and use of hand tools and light duty equipment requiring on-the-job-training. The Public Works Laborer II requires a minimum of two years as a Laborer I or equivalent and skill at performing concrete forming and finishing, performing maintenance on streets and light vehicle operation. Laborer positions may advance to Equipment Operator or Heavy Equipment Operator with appropriate certifications/licenses and experience.RequirementsThe Public Works Laborer I is capable of performing any of the following general and special functions: Performs general labor activities that support installation and maintenance of street, sidewalk, and storm water infrastructure. Performs cleaning and assisting with sweeping, earthwork, installing, leveling, compacting, and maintaining asphalt and concrete. Learns to operate hand and light-duty construction tools and equipment such as vacuum truck, concrete saw, mowers, and other equipment assigned to Public Works Maintenance. Loads and unloads materials and equipment. Cleans and prepares construction sites. On-the-job training by assisting other skilled employees in performing their duties Actively participates in departmental on-call lists. Responds to urgent situations initiated by customers. Assists others in determining cause and location of damaged utility lines or service. Serves on-call evenings and weekends and responds to Public Works emergencies when called. Assists with manually excavating, leveling and otherwise preparing gravel and asphalt surfaces for roadways. Participates in constructing forms, placing and pouring concrete structures such as curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and flat slabs. Sets forms for sidewalks and street levels to meet ADA requirements. Places and removes barricades, flags and directs traffic, and performs other support services to construction and maintenance sites. Assists with digging and backfilling trenches and holes. Breaks and repairs concrete and asphalt surfaces. Excavate and replace concrete and asphalt surfaces. Assists with painting of streets striping and legends, including cross walk lines, curbs, and traffic control symbols. Installs, repairs, and maintains street signs. Trims brush and other obstructions around roadways including the retrieval of litter or other debris on medians, gutters, curbs, and related areas. Assists with community-based requests by participating in hanging of banners, traffic control, and equipment operation. Maintain street lights and other fixtures. May operate a pickup truck, passenger vehicle or smaller automotive equipment and may transport fellow employees, tools, materials, and debris.
