Lead HVAC/R Technician

The Sheet Metal Workers of Alaska Local 23 are currently looking for a person who is interested in adventure and an opportunity to make a living while seeing a new area! Position for Lead Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigeration Service Technicians. This multi-disciplinary trade requires a broad range of skill sets. The ideal applicant may have and will need a wide range of general skills and knowledge or a specific specialty niche focus. The key ingredients for a successful candidate are a strong work ethic, honesty, willingness to learn and become an active member of our union family. This opportunity is for immediate openings in Anchorage. When applying for this organization, proof of 8000 hours worked in the HVAC division of the trade is expected for journeyman status. Basic hand tools are required to begin work along with 8 hours annually continued education will be performed. Technology continues to advance nearly daily and even the best trained members may find themselves struggling to keep up with the newest equipment and techniques, fortunately the Local’s advanced training facility offers training for both apprentices and journeyman. Lead Technician Service Requirements • Previous 5-7 years Commercial HVAC Service Journeyman work experience 10-14K industry hours. • Journeyman Level MOA certification or Equivalent • OSHA 10 or 30 certification • First Aid & CPR certification • Previous 1-3 years leadership work experience • Advanced Knowledge of Commercial HVACR system types, general operating parameters, and troubleshooting practices. Example: Constant Volume, VAV Pressure dependent vs Pressure Independent systems, Forward Curve vs Reversed Incline, Analog vs Digital, Proportional vs Floating controls, building pressure operating design and associated controls, Minisplit A/C units, Scroll and Semi Hermitic Compressors, System Recovery, Evacuation and Charging. • Advanced understanding of Construction design and building practices. • Advanced understanding of Electrical and Controls Wiring Diagrams • Advanced understanding of Commercial HVAC Control types. • Electrical, Digital, and pneumatic building controls • Experience Identifying and sourcing replacement components from Vendors. • Experience writing detailed service work orders. • Advanced understanding and experience of Service Industry standards and procedures (tools and practices) • Continuing Education to stay current with Industry standards and procedures. • Experience planning and coordinating repairs and service logistics with customers and technicians. • Experience working with subcontractors and Vendors to perform complete services to customers. • Experience working with Equipment manufacturers technical support teams. Benefits Total package rates at Journeyman are $83.34 an hour with collective bargaining rights for future wage increases. Maintenance Technician - HVAC

Job Summary: Technicians will perform a variety of skilled to highly skilled work in one or more of the following building trades: building controls, electrical, heating plants, heating-ventilation-air conditioning (HVAC), and plumbing as well as other duties as assigned. New Hire Starting Hourly Rate: Grade 13: $34.18 - $38.38 DOE Internal Hourly Rate: Determined by the ESSA Negotiated Agreement Work Hours: 7.5 hours Work Year: 12 month Bargaining unit: Education Support Staff Association (ESSA) Job Qualifications/Requirements (please review job description for qualifications and duties of the position): • High school diploma or GED equivalent. • For electrician or plumber positions only: successful completion of a vocational technical school or recognized apprenticeship training program in the respective trade. • Four (4) years of experience in the specific trade at a journeyman level or work experience, which demonstrates an ability to perform at a journeyman level in the desired trade. • Must possess good oral and written communication skills in English. • Must possess knowledge of current craft techniques, working knowledge of pertinent building and fire codes, computers and programs associated with the craft, basic math and algebra. • Must be able to read, understand, and evaluate blueprints, specifications, operating and maintenance manuals and transfer that knowledge to field repairs; must have the ability to make decisions, use safe procedures, work under adverse environmental conditions, plan, layout, and complete complex assignments; must have the ability to operate a wide variety of hand and power tools, equipment and diagnostic equipment and be able to perform heavy lifting (at least 70 lbs.). • Must keep any required state certificates or licenses necessary to perform work in the desired trade current. • Must hold and maintain a valid State of Alaska driver's license and the ability to receive and maintain access to military bases.
