HVAC Technician

Elmira College is a private liberal arts College located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Elmira College was the first college to offer a comprehensive curriculum for women, and is home of the Center for Mark Twain Studies. We are seeking an HVAC Technician to join the Facilities team. The HVAC Technician is responsible for the daily operation of both the heating and cooling systems at Elmira College and other locations or buildings owned or operated by Elmira College. This is a full-time, first shift, Monday – Friday position, with rotating on-call schedule which may result in occasional overtime on nights or weekends. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Diagnose, repair, replace, and maintain residential and commercial forced air heaters and hydronic boilers and steam boilers; • Diagnose, repair, replace and maintain air conditioning units ranging from one-ton units up to 250-ton chiller units; • Diagnose, repair, replace and maintain commercial kitchen equipment and refrigeration units; • Diagnose, repair, replace and maintain chilled water loops including cooling towers and air-cooled condenser units. QUALIFICATIONS: • Flexible schedule to oversee possible night and weekend events; • Possess a high school diploma or GED; • 3+ years of experience preferred; • Certified HVAC Technician preferred; • A valid driver's license with acceptable driving history as required by College's liability insurance underwriter; • Ability to coordinate multiple activities with attention to detail; • Ability and experience in using basic hand tools; • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. WORK LOCATION: On- Campus (NOT remote) COMPENSATION: $24-$26 per hour This position is benefit eligible. STATUS: Non-exempt WORKING CONDITIONS HVAC Technicians will work in all weather conditions inside and outside all year round. Work performed will take place in a Campus environment which includes offices, classrooms, and residential areas (dorms and common areas). Will work directly around chemicals, dust, and fumes, along with hot surfaces and high voltage power. Ability to walk, stand, push, pull, reach, bend, lift up to 25 pounds, finger dexterity, and read instructions, with or without a reasonable accommodation. Position Overview Mechanical HVAC Assembly Technician II to take ownership of the mechanical and refrigeration assembly of our 36,000 BTU machine tool coolant chillers. This is a hands-on role suited for experienced technicians familiar with HVAC/refrigeration systems, mechanical assembly, and industrial equipment. Key Responsibilities Assemble sheet metal base and frame structures. Install components including: 7.5 HP motor and 1 HP coolant pump Air conditioning compressor, heat exchanger, condenser, accumulator, and expansion valve Run 1? plumbing lines and assemble associated pipe fittings. Cut, prep, and braze copper piping (3/8?, 1/2?, 5/8?). Operate forklifts and hand carts for material handling. Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment. Provide guidance and mentorship to junior technicians. Skills & Requirements: 5+ years of hands-on experience in HVAC/R (chillers, rooftop systems, refrigeration, controls). Strong understanding of the refrigeration cycle and mechanical systems. Skilled in troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing HVAC/refrigeration units. Experience with industrial or commercial machine assembly is a strong plus. Ability to read mechanical and piping assembly drawings; basic electrical knowledge is a bonus. Comfortable using hand tools, torque wrenches, and applying proper sealing compounds (e.g., Loctite). Familiarity with belts, pulleys, and shim alignment. Strong safety awareness and ability to work independently or in a team setting. Physical Requirements: Ability to work in a manufacturing environment, including standing for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 50lbs and work with tools and machinery safely.
