Chemung county Buildings & Grounds is actively seeking an ELECTRICIAN. Generous paid time off and enrollment in NYS Retirement System. This position is responsible for performing skilled work in applying the techniques of the trade in the planning, installation, maintenance and repair of electrical wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus and control equipment according to established specifications and codes. An incumbent in this class must determine the causes of malfunctions in electrical systems and possess the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform any or all skilled tasks of the trade. General instructions are received regarding what tasks are to be performed. Considerable leeway in judgment is permitted for planning the details of each task. Direct supervision may be exercised over the work of subordinates. Does related work as required. Responsibilities • Plans layout consistent with the scope of assignments to minimize waste, to provide access for future maintenance and to avoid unsightly or hazardous wiring, consistent with specifications and electrical codes; • Draws sketches which illustrate location and sequence of wiring and ancillary equipment or follows wiring diagrams on blueprints drawn by architects, engineers or contractors; • Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit and tubing by using such tools as hand saws, pipe threaders and conduit benders; • Pulls wires through conduit, splices wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads with knives or pliers, twisting or soldering wires together and applying tape or terminal caps and connects wiring to lighting fixtures by using various hand tools; • Installs and maintains control and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays and circuit breakers, fuses and panel boards; • Installs and maintains electric lighting and heating systems; • Installs and maintains various equipment and systems such as fire alarms, program clocks, telephones, security cameras, monitors, remote control equipment; • Diagnose the functioning of equipment or systems to detect electrical malfunctions by using test instruments such as ammeters, volt meters, ohmmeters, continuity testers and test lamps; • Repairs malfunctions by such methods as replacing burnt-out elements, fuses, transistors, diodes, etc., by-passing or replacing defective wiring and other electrical/electronic components as needed; • Estimates both material needed and time needed to perform work; • Responsible for purchasing material such as conduit, wiring, motors, controls, fuses, switches, bulbs, etc.; • May be required to perform other maintenance or labor tasks as directed. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Satisfactory completion of an Apprenticeship Program in the electrical trade and four (4) years of full-time commercial, industrial or institutional experience at the Journeyman level. Lead Electrician - Facilities SJH

MAIN FUNCTION: Assists in planning, scheduling and assisting of renovations, maintaining and preventative maintenance and repair work of building, systems and utilities.
